Luka Modrić's World Cup journey has come to an end, but the Croatian legend now faces another major decision as he prepares for the 2026/27 club season.
Following Croatia's Round of 16 elimination against Portugal, attention has quickly shifted to Modrić's future at AC Milan, where new head coach Ruben Amorim has reportedly made the veteran midfielder one of his first priorities.
According to reports from Italy, Amorim is determined to keep the 40-year-old at San Siro and sees him as a central figure in the new era he is preparing to build with the Rossoneri.
Since replacing Massimiliano Allegri, the Portuguese coach has wasted little time in planning for the future. One of his earliest objectives has been securing Modrić's place in the squad, not simply as an experienced dressing-room leader, but as an important player on the pitch.
Amorim believes the former Real Madrid star still possesses the quality, leadership and winning mentality needed to guide a team undergoing significant change.
Modrić's current contract reportedly includes an option that would automatically extend his stay until the end of the 2026/27 season, and negotiations over activating that clause are believed to be progressing positively.
There are several reasons why remaining in Milan appeals to the Croatian captain. Modrić enjoyed another impressive season with the Rossoneri, while his family has also settled comfortably in Italy. His daughter, Ema Modrić, currently represents Croatia at Under-13 level, adding another personal reason to continue his stay.
If he signs the extension, Modrić can also expect a different footballing environment.
Amorim is expected to move Milan away from the more cautious tactical approach associated with Allegri and introduce a higher-tempo, more aggressive and attack-minded style of play. The Portuguese believes Modrić's intelligence, passing range and ability to control possession make him an ideal player to help implement those ideas.
Modrić's international campaign ended earlier than he had hoped after Croatia suffered a 2-1 defeat to Portugal in the World Cup Round of 16, bringing another memorable chapter of his national team career to a close.
Now the focus turns back to club football. Whether Modrić chooses to extend his stay at Milan will become one of the first major decisions of the Amorim era and could shape the Rossoneri's ambitions for the new season.
