Benfica’s iconic Estádio da Luz is set to expand its capacity to 70,000 seats, as president Rui Costa announces plans to meet the growing demand from the club's massive fanbase.
The Estádio da Luz, home to Benfica and the largest stadium in Portugal with its current 65,592-seat capacity, is set to grow even larger. Despite its size, the stadium is often unable to accommodate all of the club's fans, as Benfica boasts a massive supporter base, claiming over five million fans in Portugal alone.
Speaking on the 70th anniversary of the stadium, Benfica president Rui Costa revealed plans to increase capacity to 70,000 seats, ensuring the stadium can welcome even more fans for Benfica’s home matches.

Rui Costa highlighted the incredible average attendance numbers at the Estádio da Luz, which often surpass 60,000 spectators per game—a remarkable figure for Portuguese football.
"Most of our matches are sold out, and thousands of fans are left outside without tickets. This shows just how huge Benfica is. That's why we want a bigger stadium. Benfica and its fans deserve more."
He continued: "To honor the anniversary of our beloved Luz, we are thrilled to announce that we will soon increase the capacity of the stadium to 70,000 seats."
A rich history at the Estádio da Luz
The Estádio da Luz, originally built in 1954, underwent a major renovation in 2003 ahead of Euro 2004, where it served as a key venue. In its earlier form, the stadium could hold up to 120,000 spectators, and its official record attendance was set in 1987, when an incredible 135,000 fans watched Benfica face Porto in a derby match.
While today’s regulations and modern stadium designs limit capacities to ensure safety and comfort, the upcoming expansion will reaffirm Luz’s status as one of the most iconic and fan-packed arenas in European football.
