Denis Shtengelov, one of Russia’s wealthiest individuals, is in talks to invest in Koper, with plans for a state-of-the-art training center and a transformative future.
Koper, the Slovenian PrvaLiga club, has attracted the attention of Denis Shtengelov, a Russian billionaire with a net worth of approximately $1.3 billion, according to Forbes. Shengelov, who resides in Australia and has vast business interests in the Balkans, is reportedly interested in acquiring the club and revolutionizing its infrastructure by building a modern training center—the first of its kind in Slovenian football.
Shtengelov has already made significant investments in the region, including his purchase of Croatia’s renowned Zvečevo confectionery company in 2023. Recently, his backing facilitated the financial revival of Croatian top-flight club Gorica, where his representative, Ilija Karamatić, invested millions. Gorica’s plans under the new ownership include not only securing top-flight survival but also developing a state-of-the-art training facility.
The influence of Slovenians is evident in Gorica's transformation, with Denis Mojstrović serving as an assistant coach and Boštjan Blažinčič acting as a sports advisor.
A transformative vision for Koper
Shtengelov, through Karamatić, has now turned his sights on Koper, viewing the club as a promising project. Discussions with Koper president Anto Guberac are reportedly underway. The vision extends beyond managing the senior team; the objective is to make Koper a pioneer in Slovenian football by establishing a dedicated training center, a facility that is already a standard in top football leagues worldwide.
A historic investment for Slovenian football?
If Shtengelov successfully acquires Koper, he would become the wealthiest owner in Slovenian football, surpassing even Maxim Demin, the influential figure behind Celje. This move could mark a significant turning point for Koper, potentially positioning it as a hub for football development in the region.
