Wrexham co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have been warned that offering £50,000-a-week contracts could create tension within the squad as the club prepares for life in the Championship.
Wrexham’s Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney are reportedly ready to splash the cash this summer, but pundits are urging caution over potential wage imbalances as the club enters the Championship following three straight promotions.
The Red Dragons have already smashed recruitment records at the SToK Racecourse, with Sam Smith joining in a £2 million deal in January 2025, and veteran forward Jay Rodriguez reportedly earning £15,000-a-week.
Now, Wrexham are said to be targeting Fulham captain Tom Cairney, who becomes a free agent this summer. Reports claim the Welsh side are willing to offer him a £50,000-a-week deal—a wage bracket that would place him among the highest earners in the Championship.
Former EFL star Don Goodman has warned that such ambitious wage offers could cause unrest: “If those figures are true... they will be two of the highest-paid players in the Championship. That’s staggering. Cairney and Poku would help their clubs, but if others aren’t earning similar money, could that create resentment and disharmony in the dressing room?”
Birmingham City, backed by NFL legend Tom Brady, are reportedly making similar moves, with a £30,000-a-week offer on the table for Kwame Poku. Both clubs are eyeing fast tracks to the Premier League, but financial disparity inside squads could be a hidden challenge.
Wrexham are also being linked to a string of high-profile names, including Premier League winner Jamie Vardy, Nottingham Forest midfielder Lewis O’Brien, and Wales international Charlie Savage.
While the ambition is clear, insiders stress that building a competitive squad requires more than just deep pockets—it demands careful dressing room management as well.
