Wrexham’s Hollywood owners have been told smarter recruitment is essential if the club reaches the Championship, where spending power and competition are much higher.
Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have been issued a stark warning that their transfer strategy will need a major rethink if Wrexham earn promotion to the Championship, with experts suggesting the club is “in for a shock” at the next level.
The Red Dragons have enjoyed rapid success since the celebrity duo took over, surging through the National League and remaining fiercely competitive in League Two. With a promotion push from League One now on the cards, the club has broken spending records and invested heavily in pursuit of back-to-back-to-back promotions.
But football advisor Robbie Dilks has warned that moving up to the second tier of English football brings a different set of challenges. “They’ve got to be much cleverer with transfers if they reach the Championship,” he told reporters. “There are clubs in that division with Premier League parachute money and huge budgets. Wrexham can’t outspend everyone anymore.”
The call for caution extends beyond the transfer market. Dilks also questioned whether Phil Parkinson, who has managed over 200 games with Wrexham, is the right figure to lead the club forward, hinting that the project may need a “bigger name” on the touchline to continue its rise.
Reynolds and McElhenney have brought massive attention and financial investment to the North Wales club, but the Championship represents a major step up in terms of quality, depth, and infrastructure. With Premier League ambitions on the horizon, the next phase of the club’s journey will require a shift in recruitment strategy and long-term planning.
