Former Inter youth player and SPAL captain Nicolas Giani has passed away at the age of 39 after a long battle with illness.
Italian football is mourning the death of Nicolas Giani, who has passed away at the age of 39 after a long battle with an incurable illness.
Giani came through the youth academy of Inter, where he was part of the Nerazzurri setup between 1998 and 2005. Although he never made a competitive appearance for Inter’s first team, the club paid tribute with a short and emotional statement.
“FC Internazionale Milano expresses its deepest condolences following the passing of Nicolas Giani, a defender who was part of the Nerazzurri youth sector from 1998 to 2005. The club extends its sincere sympathies to his family,” Inter said.
A respected career in Italian football
Born in Como, Giani began his football journey in Inter’s academy in the early 2000s. After loan spells, he left the club permanently and went on to build a solid professional career across Italy, wearing the shirts of Cremonese, Vicenza and Spezia.
He retired from professional football in 2022, after being diagnosed with a serious illness.
A historic legacy at SPAL
Giani left his deepest mark at SPAL, where he became team captain and made more than 100 appearances. His time in Ferrara coincided with one of the most remarkable periods in the club’s history.
With Giani as a leader in defence, SPAL first earned promotion from Serie C, and then achieved the extraordinary feat of reaching Serie A, returning to Italy’s top flight for the first time in 49 years.
International experience
Giani also represented Italy at various youth levels, though he never received a call-up to the senior national team.
His passing has prompted tributes across Italian football, particularly from SPAL supporters, for whom he symbolised leadership, resilience and one of the club’s greatest modern achievements.
Italian football has lost a respected figure — and a captain who helped write history.
