Saudi Arabia appointed Georgios Donis as head coach until 2027 after parting ways with Hervé Renard, signaling a shift ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
Saudi Arabia have made a late coaching change ahead of key World Cup preparations, appointing Georgios Donis as the new national team manager on a contract running until July 2027.
The Greek coach replaces Hervé Renard, whose second spell in charge has come to an end by mutual agreement. Renard returned in October 2024 after the departure of Roberto Mancini, but recent results increased pressure on his position.
Donis arrives with extensive experience in both European and Saudi football. He has managed clubs such as AEK and PAOK, but more importantly, he built a significant part of his career in Saudi Arabia, working with Al Hilal, Al Wehda, Al Fateh and Al Khaleej.
The federation highlighted that familiarity as a key factor.
“He has extensive experience in the league, which allows him to adapt quickly.”
His track record includes several titles, among them domestic trophies in Cyprus and success in Saudi competitions such as the King’s Cup, the Crown Prince’s Cup and the Super Cup.
The timing of the change is significant. It comes less than two months before the start of the World Cup, following disappointing results, including a 0-4 loss to Egypt and a 2-1 defeat to Serbia.
Despite the recent downturn, Renard leaves with a strong legacy, especially after the historic win against Argentina at the 2022 World Cup.
Saudi Arabia now turn to a different profile of coach.
The appointment of Donis, who does not carry the same global status as previous names, reflects a possible shift in approach. In recent years, the federation invested heavily, highlighted by Mancini’s reported 25 million euro annual salary.
With Group H ahead, featuring Uruguay, Spain and Cape Verde, the new coach faces an immediate challenge.
The coming weeks will show whether this decision marks a change in direction or a short-term solution under pressure.
