Lionel Messi wanted to join a Saudi Pro League club on a short-term deal during the MLS offseason, but Saudi officials reportedly turned down his proposal.
Lionel Messi has reportedly been denied permission to join a Saudi Pro League club on a short-term deal during the upcoming MLS offseason, according to RMC Sport.
The Inter Miami star had hoped to spend part of the league’s four-month winter break in Saudi Arabia to stay in competitive shape ahead of the 2026 World Cup, but Saudi officials quickly rejected the idea.
Saudis send a clear message
Messi’s proposal, which would have involved a temporary contract with one of the Pro League teams, was dismissed by both the league and local authorities. The reasoning, reports say, is rooted in principle — the Saudi Pro League does not want to be viewed as a “temporary destination” for global stars but rather as a serious, permanent competition that can rival Europe’s top leagues.
The decision, though surprising given the presence of Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, and other global names in Saudi Arabia, is seen as a statement of intent from a league determined to build long-term credibility rather than serve as a training ground, even for one of the greatest players of all time.
Messi focused on 2026 World Cup
Messi, who has spent the past two seasons with Inter Miami, remains determined to stay sharp ahead of what could be his final World Cup.
Since moving to the MLS, he has played 83 matches, scoring 73 goals and providing 37 assists. The Argentine recently extended his contract with Inter Miami until 2028, by which time he will be 41 years old.
His current market value stands at €18 million, still remarkable for a player approaching 40. Despite Saudi Arabia’s rejection, Messi remains committed to maintaining his top form for the 2026 World Cup, set to be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
