Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni says the national team can now play successfully with or without Lionel Messi, highlighting tactical maturity ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Lionel Scaloni has said that Lionel Messi is no longer a "necessity" for Argentina to succeed, as the reigning world champions continue to evolve into a well-rounded, adaptable squad.

Speaking ahead of Argentina’s clash with Colombia, the head coach acknowledged Messi’s enduring brilliance but stressed that the team is no longer dependent on him as it once was.

“The team is now in a moment where it can play in the same way with Leo or without Leo, which used to be more complex in the past,” Scaloni told reporters. “Now we don't have this necessity and the team works in the same way, that's good.”

Messi, who turns 38 on June 24, has amassed 192 international caps and scored 112 goals for Argentina. He has led his nation to a World Cup title and two Copa América triumphs, cementing his legendary status.

Despite missing some recent qualifiers due to injury, Argentina notched important wins over Brazil and Uruguay. Messi was also a second-half substitute in the 1–0 victory over Chile, a match that further showed the team's growing independence from its captain.

Still, Scaloni made it clear that Messi’s influence remains crucial. The Inter Miami star is expected to feature in Argentina’s title defence at the 2026 World Cup, though his club future is uncertain as his MLS contract has not yet been extended beyond the current deal.

Messi’s decision on whether to continue at Inter Miami—or seek a new challenge—could shape the final chapter of his club career, but for Argentina, his legacy already transcends results on the pitch.
