Former Germany international Kevin Behrens sparked outrage after physically and verbally attacking Lugano teammate Georgios Koutsias during a pre-season friendly.
A pre-season friendly between FC Lugano and Viktoria Plzen descended into chaos after a shocking incident involving former Germany international Kevin Behrens.
In the 72nd minute, Behrens appeared to lose control without any obvious provocation, turning on his own teammate Georgios Koutsias during a defensive phase of play. The 34-year-old striker sprinted towards Koutsias, forcefully shoved him to the ground, and began hurling verbal abuse at the younger forward—scenes that were broadcast live.
Audio from the television feed clearly captured Behrens shouting insults and aggressively ordering his teammate to stay silent. The situation escalated rapidly and threatened to turn into a serious physical confrontation.
Teammates forced to intervene
The incident was eventually halted by Uran Bislimi, who physically pulled Behrens away to prevent further escalation. Even then, the striker failed to calm down. As he walked toward the bench, he continued shouting and gesturing angrily, signalling that he wanted to be substituted.
Moments later, Behrens left the pitch, but the damage—to both Lugano’s image and the dressing-room atmosphere—had already been done.
Club response and investigation
FC Lugano reacted swiftly, issuing an official statement in which the club condemned the incident “in the strongest possible terms”. The Swiss side confirmed that an internal investigation has been launched and that disciplinary measures are being considered.
As of now, Behrens has not issued a public apology or explanation.
A troubling pattern
The episode has revived memories of Behrens’ earlier controversy. In autumn 2024, while playing for VfL Wolfsburg, he sparked widespread criticism after refusing to sign a rainbow-coloured shirt and making a homophobic remark. Although he later apologised publicly, this latest outburst in Switzerland suggests ongoing issues with emotional control.
