Kevin Behrens caused a shocking scene in a friendly match for Lugano by physically and verbally attacking teammate Georgios Koutsias. The incident, broadcast live, had to be stopped by another player.

A shocking incident marked the friendly match between FC Lugano and Viktoria Plzeň, leaving the football public stunned.

Former German international Kevin Behrens physically and verbally attacked his own teammate, Georgios Koutsias, in a scene that was broadcast live and quickly spread across social media.

The incident happened in the 72nd minute of the match. During an attacking move by the Czech team, Behrens suddenly ran towards Koutsias, pushed him violently to the ground and began shouting at him aggressively.

The microphones picked up the 34-year-old striker insulting his much younger teammate with extremely inappropriate language, repeatedly ordering him to be quiet.

The situation had to be stopped by another Lugano player, Uran Bislimi, who physically pulled Behrens away to prevent a more serious conflict.

Even after that, Behrens did not calm down. As he walked towards the bench, he continued shouting and clearly signalled that he wanted to be substituted.

Shortly after the match, FC Lugano issued an official statement, in which they condemned the incident in the strongest possible terms and announced an internal investigation and possible disciplinary measures.

So far, Behrens has not commented publicly on the incident.

The scandal has also reopened old controversies surrounding the German striker. Back in 2024, while still playing for VfL Wolfsburg, Behrens caused outrage when he refused to sign a rainbow-coloured shirt and made a homophobic remark. Although he later apologised, this new episode in Switzerland suggests that his problems with controlling his emotions have not disappeared.

Lugano is also well known to Slovenian football fans. Celje faced the Swiss club four times last year and eliminated them in the round of 16 of the Conference League in the 2024/25 season. This season, Celje knocked Lugano out again, this time in the third qualifying round, with a total score of 7:4.

What was meant to be a routine friendly match has instead turned into a serious disciplinary case and a major embarrassment for the Swiss club.
