Diego Maradona suffered for 12 hours before his death due to untreated heart failure, a forensic expert revealed during a trial of seven medics accused of negligence.

Argentina has been shaken by new revelations surrounding the death of football icon Diego Maradona, as a forensic expert testified that the legendary player “died in long agony” that could have been prevented with proper medical care.
Carlos Cassinelli, director of forensic medicine for the Argentine police, spoke during the ongoing trial of seven medical professionals accused of criminal negligence in the final days of Maradona’s life. Cassinelli said that Maradona’s heart was “completely surrounded by fat and blood clots,” and that the signs of his deteriorating health had been evident for days.
“This is a patient who had been accumulating fluid in his body for several days. It’s not something that came on suddenly,” Cassinelli told the court. “Any doctor should have recognized the symptoms.”
The official autopsy concluded that Maradona died of acute pulmonary edema, brought on by congestive heart failure. Cassinelli added that Maradona likely suffered for at least 12 hours before his death.
Seven medical professionals, including neurosurgeon Leopoldo Luque, psychiatrist Agustina Cosachova, a psychologist, and several nurses, are on trial for allegedly failing to provide the necessary care during Maradona’s home recovery. Witnesses previously told investigators that Maradona’s face and abdomen were visibly swollen in the days leading up to his death.
Luque had served as Maradona’s personal doctor for four years, while Cosachova continued to prescribe medication until the day the football icon passed away.
The revelations are a devastating addition to a case that has already sparked public outrage across Argentina and the footballing world. The trial continues.
