David Beckham has officially been awarded a knighthood for services to sport and charity, capping a remarkable career marked by global success, personal challenges, and enduring cultural influence.
David Beckham has officially been recognised as Sir David Beckham after receiving a knighthood from King Charles at Windsor Castle. The honour, awarded for his services to sport and charity, also means that his wife Victoria Beckham now carries the title Lady Beckham.
The 50-year-old former Manchester United and England star, now co-owner of Inter Miami, had long been linked to such recognition. He was previously appointed an OBE in 2003, although leaked emails in 2017 appeared to show frustration over being overlooked for further honours. Despite past controversies, Beckham has now received the distinguished title he has spoken about with pride.
“I’m immensely proud,” Beckham said at the time. “It’s such an emotional moment for me to share with my family.”
Beckham’s football career remains one of the most recognisable in modern sport. He made over 100 appearances for England, won league titles in England, Spain, the USA and France, and became a global football and cultural figure due to his technical brilliance, trademark free-kicks, and media presence.
However, his rise was not without difficulties. One of the most challenging periods came during the 1998 World Cup, when a red card against Argentina led to intense public backlash. Beckham later described the aftermath as “brutal” in his Netflix documentary.
His private life has also faced scrutiny, including allegations of infidelity in 2004, which Beckham strongly denied. Through it all, he and Victoria remained publicly united. “We’ve ridden the storm,” Victoria said recently, reflecting on the couple’s 26 years of marriage.
Today, Beckham is celebrated not just for his football legacy but for his work beyond the pitch. He is a long-time UNICEF ambassador and recently became an ambassador for The King’s Foundation, helping young people access careers in horticulture and heritage crafts.
His personal life continues to draw attention, including the reported family tensions involving his son Brooklyn and daughter-in-law Nicola Peltz. Yet Beckham’s legacy remains defined by perseverance, influence and longevity.
Victoria summed up her pride in a message celebrating his honour: “You’ve always been my knight in shining armour — and now it’s official.”
