Rafael Benitez, a celebrated European coach with a Champions League title under his belt, is the leading candidate to take over as head coach of Brazilian giant São Paulo, following a successful wave of European coaches in Brazil.

Following a trend set by Portuguese coaches Jorge Jesus and Abel Ferreira, who achieved significant success in Brazil, São Paulo is considering bringing in Rafael Benitez, a prominent European name, as their next head coach. The Brazilian club has been without a permanent coach since Dorival Junior left to manage the national team, with Thiago Carpini stepping in temporarily.

Reports from Brazilian media suggest that preliminary discussions between Benitez and São Paulo have been promising, with formal negotiations set to take place on Sunday to potentially finalize the appointment.

Benitez, who was dismissed from Celta Vigo earlier this season due to poor results, has an impressive coaching resume with stints at Liverpool, Valencia, Inter Milan, Napoli, Real Madrid, Chelsea, and Newcastle, where he was highly influential in European football.

If appointed, this would mark Benitez's third time coaching Colombian star James Rodriguez, with whom he has previously worked at Real Madrid and Everton, albeit with mixed success in terms of player-coach dynamics.
