Standard Liège faces financial disaster with €70 million in debt, fan unrest, and poor performances under American ownership. Will this storied Belgian club survive?

Founded in 1898 by students in Liège inspired by their Parisian counterparts, Standard Liège grew to become one of Belgium’s most storied clubs. With finalists in the Cup Winners’ Cup, semi-finalists in the European Cup, and one of the three most successful clubs in the country, Standard was a source of pride for the industrial, working-class region of Wallonia. Legendary figures like Ernst Happel, Raymond Goethals, and Eric Gerets were part of this club's history, while more recently, fans celebrated players like Axel Witsel, Igor De Camargo, and Milan Jovanović during their championship-winning years of the late 2000s.

But those glory days now feel like a distant memory. Standard is on the verge of bankruptcy, with €70 million in debt threatening the club’s future. Bailiffs have already warned of potential asset seizures, and if the club doesn’t repay part of the debt soon, they risk being demoted to the fourth tier of Belgian football.

The 777 Partners Group, an American investment firm, acquired Standard in 2022, but their ownership has brought disastrous consequences. Known for financial scandals globally—including alleged fake airline flights and theft of technical equipment—the group has acquired several football clubs, including Genoa, Hertha Berlin, Vasco da Gama, Melbourne Victory, and Red Star FC in France. However, their management has left Standard crippled financially, with no clear plan to rebuild the club.

The current squad, led by Croatian coach Ivan Leko, reflects the chaos off the pitch. Standard’s performances have been uninspired, and the team has managed just 12 goals in 18 matches this season, making them the least effective attack in the Belgian league. Their latest 0-0 draw against the struggling Germinal Beerschot highlights the dire state of the team.

Standard’s famously passionate fanbase, some of the most devoted in Belgian football, have reached their breaking point. During the away match against Germinal Beerschot, fans displayed a provocative banner aimed at the absentee American owners who "enjoy the Florida sunshine" while the club suffers. The banner read:

"We’re holding the rats in our pants, maybe they’ll find your balls there."

The message was a clear expression of solidarity among fans who demand change, as well as a plea to those who have yet to join the resistance against the ownership. Frustration has been growing, not just due to financial mismanagement but also because the owners have avoided public appearances and seem detached from the club’s worsening state.

Last season, Standard finished 10th, one of their worst results in 70 years, and the current campaign hasn’t been much better. The club sits 8th in the league, far below the expectations of fans who remember the glory years when Standard rivaled Anderlecht and Club Brugge for dominance in Belgian football.

Many supporters long for the days of Ernst Happel, Raymond Goethals, and more recent heroes like Axel Witsel and Milan Jovanović, when the club was a beacon of hope for the region and regularly challenged Belgium’s wealthier Flemish clubs. Today, however, potential buyers are reportedly deterred by the murky dealings of the current ownership, making a sale unlikely.

Without significant intervention, Standard’s future looks bleak. The club’s financial troubles, coupled with its poor form on the pitch, have created a downward spiral. If the €70 million debt isn’t addressed soon, the consequences could be catastrophic: demotion to the lower leagues and potentially the collapse of one of Belgium’s greatest football institutions.

For now, fans remain the heart and soul of Standard, continuing to fight for their beloved club even as ownership neglects its responsibilities. Whether the pride of Wallonia can rise from this crisis remains uncertain, but time is running out.
