Mehdi Taremi missed his flight to the USA due to the Iran-Israel conflict, leaving Inter without him for their Club World Cup opener against Monterrey.

Inter Milan face an unexpected headache ahead of their Club World Cup campaign in the United States: star striker Mehdi Taremi could not board his flight due to the escalating conflict in his home country of Iran.

The experienced forward, who joined Inter for this season, had planned to travel with the squad to Los Angeles, where Inter will face Monterrey in their opening group match. While his teammates have arrived safely, Taremi was forced to stay behind after all flights from Tehran were suspended amid rising tensions with Israel, including regular airstrikes exchanged between the two countries in recent days.

According to reports, Taremi had checked in at the airport but was turned back when his flight — along with all other departures — was cancelled.

Inter now hope the situation stabilises quickly enough for Taremi to receive clearance to fly to the USA and join the squad before Wednesday’s match, which kicks off at 3 AM Central European Time.

The game will also mark the debut of new head coach Cristian Chivu, who recently replaced Simone Inzaghi, now in charge of Al Hilal.
