Taulant Xhaka reveals he asked his brother Granit to skip Switzerland’s upcoming match against Serbia, citing emotional pressures.

Taulant Xhaka, who played in the infamous Serbia vs. Albania match that was halted due to on-field incidents, shared his concerns as his younger brother Granit Xhaka prepares to face Serbia with the Swiss national team in Leskovac on Saturday.

In an interview with Swiss outlet Blick, Taulant admitted he even asked Granit to consider sitting out the match due to the emotional intensity these games often entail. “I know first-hand the pressure and emotions you must endure in this match. I couldn’t believe it when I saw the draw again matched Serbia and Switzerland,” Taulant explained.

He added, “I suggested to Granit that he talk to coach Murat Yakin about possibly skipping the game, but we all know my brother. He wants to play every match for Switzerland. It’s not easy to stay calm for 90 minutes when emotions run so high. Granit has to keep his focus, play football, win, and ignore any provocations.”

Granit Xhaka has been at the center of controversy in past World Cup encounters with Serbia. In 2018, he displayed the Albanian eagle gesture after scoring, and in 2022, he exchanged heated words and gestures, including wearing a shirt with “Jashari” written on it—referencing Adem Jashari, a figure linked to the Kosovo Liberation Army. This latest meeting promises to bring heightened emotions once more, with Taulant encouraging his brother to focus on the game and rise above the tensions.
