Newly promoted Telstar earned their first Eredivisie victory in 47 years with a stunning 2-0 win at PSV, ending the Eindhoven giants’ perfect start to the season.
Telstar pulled off one of the biggest shocks in Eredivisie history, defeating PSV Eindhoven 2-0 away from home to claim their first top-flight win in nearly half a century.
The modest club from Velsen, representing a town of just 4,000 people, had not won a first division match since their last stint in the top flight 47 years ago. That long wait ended in spectacular fashion at the Philips Stadion.
Tyrone Owusu gave Telstar the lead in the first half before Patrick Brouwer sealed the victory in the second. PSV, who had won their opening three games with 12 goals scored, could find no way back as their perfect start to the season collapsed.
The scale of Telstar’s achievement cannot be overstated. They field the lowest-valued squad in the league, feature just six foreign players, and did not spend a single cent in transfer fees this summer. Their home stadium holds just over 5,000 fans, and in goal stands Ronald Koeman Jr., son of Dutch legend Ronald Koeman.
Telstar had lost to Ajax and Zwolle in their opening games before drawing with Volendam. Now, with this historic upset against PSV, they will turn to their next challenge against Fortuna Sittard.
