Marc-André ter Stegen is leaving Barcelona, with the Catalan giants officially confirming that the German goalkeeper has joined Ajax on a season-long loan.

The agreement will keep the 34-year-old in Amsterdam until 30 June 2027, despite the fact that his contract with Barcelona still runs until 2028.

The move gives Ajax one of Europe's most experienced goalkeepers, while Barcelona reduce their wage bill and create additional room in their squad planning ahead of the new season.

A new challenge in Amsterdam

Ter Stegen arrived in the Dutch capital on Friday evening before completing the final administrative formalities between the two clubs.

Ajax have secured a goalkeeper with outstanding experience at both club and international level, including a UEFA Champions League title and more than a decade as Barcelona's first-choice keeper.

The transfer also fulfils the wishes of head coach Míchel, who reportedly wanted to work with Ter Stegen again after previously coaching him during a short loan spell at Girona.

That previous collaboration was interrupted by injury, limiting the German to only two appearances, but the pair will now reunite in Amsterdam.

An unforgettable Barcelona career

Ter Stegen leaves Barcelona after one of the most successful spells by a foreign player in the club's history.

Since arriving from Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2014, he has made 423 official appearances for the Blaugrana and won 21 major trophies, including the Champions League in 2015.

His total places him 11th on Barcelona's all-time appearance list and makes him the club's second most successful foreign player in terms of trophies, behind only Lionel Messi.

No time to settle in

Ter Stegen will be officially presented by Ajax before immediately joining first-team training.

He is expected to have little time to adapt, with Ajax preparing for a UEFA Conference League qualifier later this week before beginning their new Eredivisie campaign on Sunday.

For Barcelona, the loan marks the end of an era, while Ajax hope one of Europe's most decorated goalkeepers will help them compete for domestic and European success.
