Santos returns to Brazil's top division after a year, ending a dark chapter. The club pays tribute to its greatest icon, Pele, as it reclaims its spot in Serie A.
Santos, the iconic Brazilian club forever associated with the legendary Pele, has made its way back to the top tier of Brazilian football after a year in the second division. This comeback marks the end of a difficult chapter for the club, which holds a unique place in Brazilian football heritage due to its association with Brazil’s greatest footballer of all time, Pele.
Traditionally one of the country’s biggest clubs, Santos was relegated for the first time in its 112-year history last season. Yesterday, the club secured its return to Serie A, also known as the Brasileirao, with a 2-1 victory over Coritiba. This win mathematically guaranteed their promotion back to the elite.
"This has been the hardest year in the club’s history. We had to show a lot of courage. The mission is nearly complete, but we also want to secure the second division title," said Joao Schmidt, a midfielder for Santos.
Following their promotion, Santos paid homage to its greatest icon, Pele, and reaffirmed its commitment to honoring his legacy in the top division.
"The smile has returned. He is smiling again. From above, he watched over our nightmare, blessed our thorny path through hell, and now he can smile with us in triumph. Thank you for watching over us, King Pele. The rebirth of Santos carries your blessing. Your kingdom is safe. Because it is eternal. Like Santos. Like you," the club wrote in a statement.
