Fluminense will have to cope without their captain, Thiago Silva, for the next month, as the club confirmed the veteran defender has sustained a muscle injury. The 39-year-old, who recently returned to Brazilian football, will be out for approximately four weeks, ruling him out of several important fixtures.
The club made the announcement via social media, revealing that Silva underwent medical tests which confirmed the injury. With the calendar packed across three competitions — the Brasileirão Série A, Copa do Brasil, and the Copa Sul-Americana — the timing is far from ideal for manager Renato Gaúcho.
In Silva’s absence, Ignácio is expected to step in as the first-choice replacement, though Thiago Santos, a player already familiar with Renato’s system, is also in contention. A final decision on the starting centre-back pairing will likely be made during the team’s final training sessions ahead of each match, with Juan Freytes maintaining his spot in the lineup.
