Cristiano Ronaldo's failure to win the
World Cup should never define one of the greatest careers in football history.
Portugal's all-time leading scorer saw his final World Cup campaign come to an end in the round of 16 after a defeat to Spain, bringing the curtain down on what is almost certain to be his last appearance at the tournament. Ronaldo, who will turn 42 next February, is still expected to continue his international career under new Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus.
Despite missing out on football's biggest prize, Ronaldo leaves the World Cup with a unique record. He remains the only player to have scored in six different editions of the tournament.
Henry praises Ronaldo's lasting impact
Speaking about the Portuguese superstar, former France striker Thierry Henry insisted that Ronaldo's achievements should not be measured solely by his World Cup record.
"Many football giants never won the World Cup. That doesn't define their legacy. I wish Cristiano all the best in the future, and I hope he reaches 1,000 career goals. He has inspired generations of young players and set the standard for professionals all over the world," Henry said.
Henry's comments come as the debate over Ronaldo's place among football's all-time greats continues following Portugal's elimination.
A career filled with historic achievements
Although the World Cup trophy eluded him, Ronaldo has enjoyed one of the most decorated international careers in football history.
He has made 233 appearances for Portugal, scoring 146 goals and providing 46 assists. He also captained his country to victory at UEFA Euro 2016 and later lifted the UEFA Nations League, adding major international honours to an extraordinary club career.
Ronaldo's longevity has also set him apart, with the veteran forward continuing to compete at the highest level well into his forties while rewriting numerous scoring records for both club and country.
The debate over Ronaldo's legacy
For many observers, Henry's comments reflect a broader view shared across the football world: while the World Cup remains the sport's ultimate prize, it is only one part of a player's legacy.
With more than 900 career goals already to his name and the 1,000-goal milestone still within reach, Ronaldo continues to chase new records even after saying goodbye to the biggest stage in international football.
