Uli Hoeness jokes about Thomas Müller’s reduced role at Bayern while praising his intelligence as the German veteran begins a new chapter in MLS with Vancouver.
Uli Hoeness has sparked debate after joking about Thomas Muller’s final phase at Bayern Munich, where his influence shifted away from the pitch.
Speaking to DAZN, the long-time Bayern figure said "Thomas ended up talking more than playing football. In the end, he was just a spokesperson."
Despite the teasing tone, Hoeness made clear he respects Muller, praising his intelligence and ability to handle his role within the team.
"He knew how to present himself very well, even when he was already sitting on the bench," Hoeness added.
The 36-year-old has now started a new chapter with Vancouver in MLS, where he is under contract until the end of the year.
Hoeness admitted he did not expect Muller to move directly into playing again. Instead, he believed the German would step back and prepare for a future role in football.
"A football club today is a corporation, part of the entertainment industry. I thought he would spend time learning, visiting the NBA, MLS, NFL, or clubs like Manchester United to gain experience," he explained.
The idea reflects how Bayern Munich view Muller’s long-term future, with a potential return to the club in a different role once his playing career ends.
