Former Real Madrid star Toni Kroos believes Barcelona coach Hansi Flick made a tactical mistake in the El Clásico lineup, saying Eric Garcia should not have started ahead of Ronald Araujo.
Toni Kroos shared his thoughts after watching the first El Clasico of the season, where Real Madrid defeated Barcelona in a hard-fought league encounter. The German legend said the result did not surprise him, noting that Barcelona are going through a difficult period both physically and tactically.
Real Madrid were dominant and deserved their win, while Barcelona struggled with injuries and a lack of balance in the starting lineup. According to Kroos, that was partly down to coach Hansi Flick’s selection decisions.
“Eric Garcia should not start the derby against Real Madrid,” Kroos said. “Araujo would be more suitable, as he is faster and stronger.” The former Real Madrid midfielder believes that using Garcia over Ronald Araujo was a costly tactical choice that left Barcelona more vulnerable defensively.
Kroos also acknowledged that Barcelona’s performance was affected by the absence of key players. “They are also feeling the departure of Inigo Martinez. But they will certainly be much better when Raphinha, Lewandowski, Olmo, and Joan Garcia return to action.”
With Barcelona still recovering from several injuries, Flick’s options have been limited, forcing him to experiment with his back line. The Catalans will aim to bounce back when they host Elche on Sunday, before travelling to Belgium for a crucial Champions League clash against Club Brugge.
Meanwhile, Real Madrid continue their strong start to the season under Xabi Alonso, sitting at the top of La Liga and maintaining their impressive form in Europe.
