Toni Kroos has been awarded Germany’s Order of Merit by President Frank-Walter Steinmeier in recognition of his sporting success and charitable work.
Former Germany international Toni Kroos has received one of the country’s most prestigious honours — the Order of Merit on ribbon of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany — awarded personally by President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
In a rare and symbolic gesture, Steinmeier presented the award at Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, acknowledging not only Kroos’ extraordinary football career but also his impact beyond the pitch.
Kroos, now 35, was a central figure in Germany’s 2014 World Cup triumph and enjoyed a glittering club career with Bayern Munich and Real Madrid, where he became one of the defining midfielders of his generation.
But the award also recognises his humanitarian work. Through the Toni Kroos Foundation, established more than a decade ago, he has supported seriously ill children and their families, providing long-term assistance and visibility to those in need.
“I award the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany to Mr Toni Kroos of Madrid,” Steinmeier declared, expressing gratitude for Kroos’ contributions during and after his playing career. The president highlighted how Kroos has strengthened German–Spanish relations after more than ten years living in Madrid.
“As a midfielder, you were the heart of your team. From today, however, you are the playmaker of German–Spanish friendship. Just as you took responsibility on the pitch, you now take responsibility for others, for social cohesion, and for friendship between Germany and Spain,” Steinmeier added.
Kroos thanked the president for the honour and emphasised that his greatest pride lies in his foundation’s work. He said he is confident it will continue to help families for many years to come.
