Toni Kroos shares his reasons for retiring at his peak, contrasting his decision with Luka Modrić's choice to continue playing, even in a reduced role.
Toni Kroos (34) shocked the football world in May by announcing his retirement after the Euro, despite being a key player in Real Madrid's La Liga and Champions League triumphs last season. Kroos played as if he were a decade younger, showing the abilities and qualities to continue playing at the highest level, much like Luka Modrić (39). However, as he stated in his retirement announcement, Kroos always wanted to leave at his peak.
The phenomenal midfielder, an icon of Bayern Munich, Germany, and Real Madrid, has won three Bundesliga titles, three German Cups, and a Champions League with Bayern, as well as a World Cup with Germany. At Real Madrid, he secured four La Liga titles and four Champions League trophies. Three months ago, Kroos explained his decision to retire in an interview with El Larguero:
"I thought about it for months, but last month I felt that I had such a good season that it would be difficult to play better next season. I struggled with the decision to retire, but once I decided, there was no going back because I rarely change my mind."
When asked about his successor, Kroos responded: "Real Madrid has always been good at building winning teams. One day they'll play without Kroos, another without Modrić, just as they did and won without Ronaldo or Ramos. You'll see next season, Real will always be victorious."
On the comment that Modrić, four years older, decided to continue playing, Kroos said: "Luka and I have different views on how to end our careers. I always wanted to leave at my peak, with my body in great condition, because I hope to live long after retirement."
Kroos revealed his retirement plans: "I have a few projects. In September, I'm opening an academy in Madrid. I enjoy helping children fulfill their dreams. I'm passionate about working with kids. Additionally, I'm starting a competition in Germany similar to the Kings League. My plan for retirement is to spend more time at home with my children."
In a recent interview with Spanish media, Kroos touched on Modrić again: "Luka wants to play until the end. I would never do that. Moreover, Modrić has accepted a new role where he plays less. That wouldn't be my choice. But he sees it differently; everyone has their own path."
Kroos compared Modrić to Ronaldo: "Cristiano and Luka are addicted to success. It doesn't stop. They chose to do the opposite of what 95% of footballers do, which is to stop playing at their peak. Instead, they decided to enjoy football a little longer, which is also good. If they're happy with that, then great."
