Tottenham signs 17-year-old Mason Melia from St Patrick’s Athletic for a record-breaking €1.8M, the biggest transfer in Irish football history.
The Irish football league has never been a hotbed for big-money transfers, but 2025 is proving to be a landmark year for the country’s club football. For the first time ever, all Irish clubs are fully professional, marking a new era for the league.
Until now, the biggest transfer fee ever received by an Irish club was the €600,000 move of Liam Scales to Celtic in 2021. However, that record has now been tripled.
St Patrick’s Athletic has agreed to sell 17-year-old forward Mason Melia to Tottenham for a staggering €1.8 million, making it the most expensive transfer in Irish football history. If performance-based bonuses are triggered, the final sum could reach €4.2 million, putting it on par with some of the biggest transfers, for instance, in Slovenian club football history.
Melia made his senior debut at just 15 years old, amassing 41 appearances and scoring eight goals for St Patrick’s Athletic.
Due to post-Brexit regulations, he will not be able to officially complete the transfer until he turns 18.
