Tottenham Hotspur's surprise move to activate the €70 million release clause for Morgan Gibbs-White has sparked major tension, with Nottingham Forest now accusing the London club of potentially breaching transfer regulations.
Forest reportedly believe that the specific details of the buyout clause were not supposed to be public and that the clause was leaked without their consent. The club suspects someone from the player’s entourage — likely an agent — disclosed the figure, giving Spurs a potential edge in negotiations.
According to Sky Sports, Forest has not yet received any direct contact from Tottenham, either about the clause or regarding permission to speak to the player or his agent. The lack of formal communication has raised eyebrows at the City Ground, especially as Forest had no intention of selling their star midfielder.
Gibbs-White is seen as central to Forest’s ambitions next season, particularly with the club returning to European competition. Officials at Forest are reportedly furious over how the situation has been handled and are considering action if Spurs proceed without clarification or cooperation.
This isn't the first time a situation like this has occurred. Back in 2023, Chelsea faced similar backlash from Crystal Palace when they offered to pay the release clause of Eberechi Eze — a figure that was not meant to be publicly known. Palace threatened legal action, and the deal collapsed shortly after.
For now, Spurs have not responded to the accusations, and it remains to be seen whether they will proceed with the deal, which would make Gibbs-White their most expensive signing in club history.
