James Maddison called Tottenham’s situation unacceptable after defeat at Chelsea left the club needing points on the final day to secure survival.

James Maddison did not try to soften the message.

After Tottenham’s 2-1 defeat against Chelsea, the midfielder openly admitted the club’s position is unacceptable and demanded a response in the final game of the season.

The loss at Stamford Bridge extended Spurs’ survival anxiety and left them needing a result against Everton to remove any remaining danger.

Tottenham started brightly but gradually lost control.

Enzo Fernandez opened the scoring with a brilliant strike before later creating the second goal for Andrey Santos.

Richarlison reduced the deficit late on and briefly raised hopes of a comeback, but Spurs never truly looked capable of finding the equaliser.

Maddison, returning only recently after spending almost a year out with a serious knee injury, came off the bench and then spoke with unusual honesty after the match.

"It's non-negotiable. We have to get over the line for this club."

" We've got to give everything for this badge and for our fans."

The midfielder then delivered his strongest words.

" It is unacceptable and a little embarrassing that we're in this position as Tottenham Hotspur, but it's the reality."

" Now it's up to us to get out of it."

Tottenham remain in control of their own future.

A victory at home against Everton guarantees survival.

If Spurs draw, West Ham would still need an extraordinary result against Leeds United because of the huge goal difference gap.

Maddison also made a point of thanking the supporters who continued singing despite another difficult night.

"We're going to need everyone."

"Our fans were unbelievable today. Even at 2-0 down, you could hear them. I genuinely think we've got the best away support in the league."

" We need to repay them with a good performance and points on Sunday."

For Tottenham, the equation is simple now.

One more game.

One more chance to avoid a disaster nobody expected.
