Boca Juniors legend Miguel Ángel Russo has died at the age of 69 after a long illness. The coach led Boca to Copa Libertadores glory in 2007.

Heartbreaking news has arrived from Argentina: Miguel Ángel Russo, the legendary coach who led Boca Juniors to one of the club’s greatest triumphs in modern history, has passed away at the age of 69.
Just a day after reports surfaced that his health had deteriorated, Boca confirmed the news with a moving tribute on social media:
“You will forever be part of our history. Thank you for everything, Miguel.”
Russo had been battling cancer for several years and was recently receiving medical treatment at his home.
A coach who made history at La Bombonera
Russo’s name will always be synonymous with Boca Juniors’ golden era. In 2007, he guided the Buenos Aires giants to the Copa Libertadores title, defeating Brazilian side Grêmio in the final — a moment still celebrated as one of the club’s defining achievements in the 21st century.
His coaching career spanned more than four decades and included spells at Lanús, Rosario Central, Racing Club, Vélez Sarsfield, San Lorenzo, and Millonarios, with whom he also won the Colombian league title.
In June, Russo returned to Boca for a third stint, hoping to lead the team at the FIFA Club World Cup. Sadly, his health never allowed him to complete that journey.

Known for his calm demeanour, tactical intelligence, and unwavering passion, Russo was widely admired across South America — not only for his success but for his humanity. Players, fans, and fellow coaches have flooded social media with messages of love and respect.
At La Bombonera, fans gathered to lay flowers and chant his name, turning the iconic stadium into a sea of emotion.
