Young, healthy, and active. This was 26-year-old Matija Šarkić, the goalkeeper for the Montenegro national team and Millwall in England. Tragically, he unexpectedly passed away this morning.
In his apartment in Budva, Šarkić collapsed. His friends called the paramedics, but they were unable to save him.
Just a week and a half ago, Šarkić impressed while playing for Montenegro in a match against Belgium. Montenegro's coach Robert Prosinečki had seen him as the future first-choice goalkeeper for the national team.
Šarkić was born in England and began his football career in Belgium with Anderlecht. At fifteen, he moved to Aston Villa, went through several loan spells, and in 2020 transferred to Wolverhampton. After three loans, Millwall purchased him last year.
