England manager Gareth Southgate will, according to The Guardian, use Trent Alexander-Arnold in a midfield role at the European Championship.

Trent Alexander-Arnold has established himself at Liverpool as one of the best right-backs in the world, standing out especially for his excellent attacking play and being an indispensable part of one of England’s best teams in recent years.

As is often the case with defenders of his type, Alexander-Arnold is not as dominant in defensive duties. This is also why his career with the national team does not quite align with his club career.

Southgate has more confidence in Kyle Walker and Kieran Trippier for the right-back position. However, he wants to better integrate the Liverpool star into his system and is therefore looking for new solutions for him.

The Guardian reports that Southgate is very keen on the idea of playing Alexander-Arnold in midfield, complementing a trio with Declan Rice from Arsenal and Jude Bellingham from Real Madrid. This is reportedly his plan for the starting eleven in the opening match of the championship against Serbia. The outcome of this match will determine whether he continues with this midfield setup for the rest of the tournament.

Southgate also has other interesting options for the 'third midfielder' position, including Manchester United's promising talent Kobee Mainoo and Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher.

Alexander-Arnold already played in his new position in a friendly match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, where he scored a goal. However, this was in the second half when Southgate moved him back to his familiar right-back position.
