Clay Travis has called on Donald Trump to publicly guarantee the safety of Iran’s national team for the 2026 World Cup amid conflict, as uncertainty grows over their participation.
Donald Trump faces calls to step in over Iran’s national football team and their participation in the 2026 World Cup.
Author and OutKick founder Clay Travis urged the US President to publicly guarantee the safety of Iranian players so they can compete in the tournament, which the United States will co-host with Canada and Mexico.
The debate intensified after the Football Federation of Iran admitted it does not know whether the team will be able to travel to the US following recent military escalation in the region.
Speaking publicly, Travis said:
"We want Iran to represent the good people of Iran in the World Cup."
He argued that qualification represents national pride and that players deserve the chance to compete on the global stage. He also suggested Trump should personally assure safe passage.
"I will get these players from Iran. I will get them to the US. And we will keep them safe."
The 2026 tournament kicks off on June 11. Iran have been drawn in Group G alongside New Zealand, Belgium, and Egypt, with matches scheduled in Los Angeles and Seattle.
Iranian federation president Mehdi Taj admitted expectations remain low given the situation. Domestic sport in Iran has paused during a 40-day national mourning period, limiting preparation time.
Under current US policy, Iranian supporters face entry restrictions, though players and staff were previously promised visa exemptions. FIFA confirmed it is monitoring developments but has not announced a contingency plan.
If Iran withdraw, potential replacements could include Iraq or the United Arab Emirates, depending on final playoff results.
With just over three months until kickoff, pressure grows on Washington to clarify its position.
