UEFA has issued an official response following the controversy surrounding Julian Alvarez’s disallowed penalty in Atletico Madrid’s Champions League clash against Real Madrid, confirming it will propose a rule change to FIFA and IFAB.

The incident, which saw Alvarez’s penalty ruled out due to an unintentional double touch, has sparked widespread debate, with many football fans and players unaware that such a rule existed.

Atletico Madrid formally requested an investigation into the decision, prompting UEFA to release a statement acknowledging the incident and confirming their intention to review the rule.

"Although minimal, the player touched the ball with his standing foot before taking the kick, as shown in the attached video. Under the current rule (Laws of the Game, Law 14.1), the VAR should have informed the referee that the goal should be disallowed," UEFA explained.

However, UEFA now believes that unintentional double contact in penalty kicks should be reassessed.

"UEFA will enter into discussions with FIFA and the IFAB to determine whether the rule should be reviewed in cases where double contact is clearly unintentional," the statement added.

With Atletico Madrid pushing for answers, the debate over whether the rule is too harsh is expected to continue, but UEFA’s move suggests potential change in the future.

UEFA has also added a very detailed video clip of the penalty kick, which you can watch here.
