UEFA has released the results of a report on attendance at league matches across Europe for the 2023/24 season.
The UEFA report offers detailed insights into attendance figures for top-tier matches in European countries. The research revealed that the title of the most passionate football nation in Europe goes to Scotland, which boasts the highest percentage of attendees at top-flight matches relative to its population.
In Scotland, 18.36 people per 1,000 inhabitants attend top-tier football matches. In second place are the Portuguese, with 10.23 attendees per 1,000 inhabitants, followed by the Dutch, with 9.13 per 1,000.
Scotland's impressive numbers are largely thanks to their flagship clubs, Celtic and Rangers, both of which feature in the top 50 most-watched clubs in Europe. On average, Celtic’s home matches at Celtic Park draw 58,759 spectators, while Rangers’ matches at Ibrox bring in 49,315 fans.
In terms of absolute figures, Borussia Dortmund remains the most-watched club in Europe. Interestingly, six clubs from Germany’s second division also rank among the top 50 in Europe. Schalke claims an impressive ninth place, with Hamburg, Kaiserslautern, Hertha, Fortuna Düsseldorf, and Hannover also making the list.
