UEFA is under pressure to act after Scott McTominay was targeted with laser pointers during his penalty in Scotland’s 1-0 win over Greece in the Nations League play-off.
Scott McTominay, now with Napoli after leaving Manchester United, was at the center of controversy during Scotland’s 1-0 win over Greece in the UEFA Nations League play-off first leg in Piraeus.
The midfielder earned a penalty late in the first half after a foul by Lazaros Rota and confidently converted the spot kick to give Scotland the lead. However, the moment sparked outrage among fans after laser lights were visibly shone on McTominay’s face and body just before his run-up.
Viewers took to social media to condemn the act, calling it “disgraceful,” “dirty,” and “embarrassing.” One fan wrote on X, “Was it just me or did anyone else see the green laser lights on McTominay’s body and face before he took the penalty? UEFA need to intervene.”
Despite the distraction, McTominay remained composed and slotted home the winner. Former Scotland international and BBC pundit Steven Naismith acknowledged the moment, stating, “The laser pens are brought out frequently there too so Scotty was probably used to it.”
The incident has sparked calls for UEFA to take disciplinary action ahead of the second leg, which will take place at Hampden Park on Sunday, March 23.
