Udinese's six-match winless run has put coach Kosta Runjaić on the brink, with Albert Riera increasingly seen as a potential successor in Friuli.
What started as quiet whispers is now becoming hard to ignore—Udinese are in serious trouble, and the club is reportedly considering a managerial change. With the team now winless in six matches, the pressure is mounting on Kosta Runjaić, and Albert Riera’s name is gaining traction.
After a steady spell that kept Udinese near mid-table, March brought a total collapse. Since a 1-1 draw with Lazio on March 10, the team has lost five straight matches, most recently a 2-0 defeat to Torino. The crisis is deepening, and with just a handful of matches left, Udinese find themselves edging dangerously close to the relegation zone.
Riera waiting in the wings?
Riera, currently managing Celje in Slovenia, has ties to Udinese as a former player and is seen as a figure who could potentially bring fresh energy. The Spaniard has not committed to his future beyond the current season, but sources suggest he could be open to discussions sooner if the right opportunity presents itself.
"I'm focused on finishing the season with Celje. Anything beyond that will be discussed later," Riera said recently when asked about his future.
With Sandi Lovrić and Jaka Bijol both regulars in the current Udinese squad, a familiar face like Riera on the bench could bring a sense of cohesion and renewal. For now, however, the next couple of results may determine whether Runjaić survives or whether a change becomes inevitable.
