Cristhian Mosquera, Valencia’s prized young defender, has reportedly declined to extend his contract, sparking fears that the club may have to sell him amidst rising European interest.

The 20-year-old central defender, born in Alicante and standing at 191 centimeters, has become a key figure for Valencia. His market value is estimated at 30 million euros, with numerous top European clubs closely monitoring his situation. Despite being under contract until the summer of 2026, the lack of progress on an extension has created significant concern within the club.

The main sticking point is the demand from Mosquera’s representatives for a buyout clause between 20 and 30 million euros, a proposal Valencia’s management is reluctant to accept. The club’s financial struggles further complicate the matter, as they continue working on the long-delayed Nou Mestalla project. Construction of the new stadium, which began in 2007, was halted after two years due to financial difficulties and only resumed this year.

With Valencia’s finances far from stable, selling key players for high compensation appears inevitable. The club is keen to extract maximum value for Mosquera, but unless a compromise is reached, they could lose him for less than they desire. Meanwhile, 21-year-old midfielder Javi Guerra, another highly sought-after talent, is also under contract until 2026 and attracting interest from top clubs.

Valencia’s woes extend to their performance on the pitch. They are currently second from the bottom in La Liga, having won only two matches and suffered ten defeats in the first half of the season. Unless things improve quickly, relegation remains a real threat.
