Mohamed Salah left injured against Crystal Palace, but Virgil van Dijk believes the Liverpool star could still play again before his summer exit.
Mohamed Salah’s emotional exit against Crystal Palace raised fears his Liverpool career had already ended, but Virgil van Dijk is not ready to accept that scenario.
The Egyptian forward limped off during a 3-1 win with a hamstring injury, leaving the pitch in tears and casting doubt over his final weeks at Anfield.
With his contract set to expire in June, the timing puts his farewell appearances at serious risk. Liverpool has only a handful of matches left, including two at home.
Van Dijk remains hopeful.
"I hope he plays again. He will be assessed, and we will know more soon. I know he will do everything to get back as quickly as possible," said the Liverpool captain.
The defender admitted the situation is difficult, especially given Salah’s pending departure.
"When you get injured now, with only a few games left, many thoughts go through your mind. We don’t know yet. Maybe he returns next week, maybe not," he added.
Despite the uncertainty, Salah’s legacy is secure. He has scored 257 goals in 440 games, making him one of the club’s greatest players.
Van Dijk also stressed that fans will honor him properly, whether he returns to the pitch or not.
"He will get his send-off. Knowing him, he recovers fast. Let’s see," he said.
The win over Palace boosted Liverpool’s push for a Champions League spot, lifting them to fourth place behind Manchester United on goal difference.
Van Dijk also praised Alexander Isak, who impressed during the match.
"It is important for him to score. He is a top player. He will keep improving and stay important for us," Van Dijk said.
