Vincent Kompany explains Bayern’s success after beating Real Madrid, pointing to trust, consistency, and outstanding results that place him among the club’s elite coaches.

Vincent Kompany left the Santiago Bernabéu with a historic result and a clear message. After Bayern Munich defeated Real Madrid, becoming the first team in 25 years to win there in regular time, the Belgian coach kept his explanation simple and consistent with everything he has shown so far.

When asked by Steven Gerrard about the tactical approach behind such a performance, Kompany avoided any complex analysis. Instead, he pointed to continuity and belief in his players.

"This team has earned the right and the freedom to play this way. They are playing so well that I will not change my approach depending on the opponent," he said. "We played the same against PSG and today against Madrid. And it worked. I am only making changes to refresh the team."

At the core of his philosophy lies trust. Kompany believes that players perform best when they are allowed to express themselves without restrictions.

"When I was a player, I wanted the coach to give me the freedom to be who I am. Then talent does its thing. Everything else is secondary."

The numbers support his approach. In his first 100 matches in charge of Bayern, Kompany has recorded 76 wins, 13 draws, and just 11 defeats, with a striking goal difference of 302:100. His average of 2.41 points per game puts him level with Pep Guardiola and among the most effective coaches in the club’s history, with only Jupp Heynckes ahead of him.

What makes this even more notable is the context of his arrival. After the end of Thomas Tuchel’s tenure, Bayern initially targeted other high-profile names. Moves for Xabi Alonso and Roberto De Zerbi did not materialize, and Kompany emerged as an unexpected solution.

His appointment raised doubts, especially given Burnley’s relegation from the Premier League. Still, CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen strongly backed him, while sporting director Max Eberl valued his leadership, energy, and the style he had implemented during Burnley’s Championship campaign. The influence of Pep Guardiola, who coached him at Manchester City, also played a role.

Bayern has often chosen established names in the past, so this decision carried risk. Today, that risk looks justified. Kompany has built a team that plays with clarity, confidence, and consistency, turning early skepticism into strong results.

After a night like the one in Madrid, his message is clear. No adjustments, no compromises. Just belief in the idea that brought him here.
