Joško Gvardiol, defender for Manchester City and the Croatian national team, became the most expensive defender when City signed him from Leipzig for a record fee of €90 million.
Of course, Gvardiol’s salary at the world’s richest club matches his reputation and market value. According to Capology, a reliable source for footballer earnings, Gvardiol earns an annual salary of €12.44 million at City. This figure does not include bonuses.
Despite earning over a million euros a month and having teammates who drive some of the most luxurious cars, Gvardiol arrived at City’s training ground in a Volkswagen Golf. The popular and reliable model is not typically associated with football millionaires. The latest Golf model in Croatia costs between €26,000 and €36,000, with the GTI version starting at €46,000.
