Martin Odegaard missed Arsenal’s Carabao Cup semi-final clash with Chelsea after picking up a knock against Leeds, with Mikel Arteta hopeful the captain could return at the weekend.

Martin Odegaard was a surprise absentee from Arsenal’s squad for the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Chelsea, sparking concern among fans at the Emirates Stadium.

The Arsenal captain was not even named among the substitutes, despite impressing as a second-half replacement in the weekend win over Leeds United, where he controlled the tempo and provided an assist.

Before kick-off, Mikel Arteta explained the situation.

“During the Leeds game he felt a little niggle. We tried yesterday, but he wasn’t comfortable. Let’s see if he can hopefully be available for the weekend,” the Arsenal manager said.

Eberechi Eze started in the No.10 role in Odegaard’s absence, while Arsenal were again forced to reshuffle due to injuries.

The Norwegian joins Bukayo Saka on the sidelines. The England international was also unavailable after suffering an injury that is expected to keep him out for around three weeks.

Saka is set to miss the Chelsea semi-final, upcoming Premier League matches against Sunderland and Brentford, as well as the FA Cup tie with Wigan Athletic. His target for a return is the north London derby against Tottenham on February 22.

Arteta provided an update on Saka’s condition.

“He’s okay. We need more tests tomorrow to understand how he is. This game was too soon for him, but let’s hope it’s not much longer,” he said.

Despite the growing injury list, Arsenal remain active on four fronts, competing in the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup.

With options such as Noni Madueke and Eberechi Eze, Arteta still has depth in attacking areas, but Odegaard’s fitness will be crucial as the season enters a decisive phase.

The focus now shifts to whether the Norwegian playmaker will be ready for Saturday’s league clash with Sunderland.
