The business end of the tournament kicks off with two massive semi-final clashes—France vs. Spain and England vs. Argentina. Saturday will feature the third-place playoff, leading up to the main event, the World Cup final, on Sunday.
While world football’s governing body (FIFA) is yet to officially name the referee for the final, no clear frontrunner has emerged. However, several shortlists of potential candidates have surfaced online, and they heavily feature Slovenia’s top referee, Slavko Vinčić.
The Maribor-born official has already enjoyed a highly successful tournament, having taken charge of two group-stage matches and a round-of-16 tie. The question now remains: will he be handed the ultimate responsibility on Sunday?
If Vinčić lands the appointment, it will undoubtedly mark the absolute pinnacle of his refereeing career. To date, the biggest milestone on his resume was refereeing the 2024 UEFA Champions League final at Wembley, where Real Madrid defeated Borussia Dortmund. Officiating a World Cup final would be the ultimate step up and a historic achievement for Slovenian and regional football.
