Yan Diomande was expected to become one of the biggest transfer stories of the summer after his outstanding performances at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Instead, the 20-year-old RB Leipzig winger has become the centre of one of football's most complicated transfer sagas, with legal disputes, multiple agents and enormous commission demands scaring away almost every major club in Europe.
Only Real Madrid remain in the race.
From transfer battle to one-horse race
After the World Cup, Diomande attracted interest from several Premier League clubs, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid.
On paper, Leipzig appeared to be heading for a bidding war that could comfortably justify their reported €120 million valuation.
That scenario never materialised.
According to reports, interested English clubs gradually withdrew after examining the legal structure surrounding the player and those representing him.
The concerns reportedly included multiple ongoing legal disputes, five different agents in the space of two years, disagreements over image rights and commission claims involving several parties connected to previous transfers.
Rather than risk becoming involved in years of legal uncertainty, Premier League clubs reportedly chose to walk away.
PSG also pulled the plug
Paris Saint-Germain carried out their own legal review before reaching a similar conclusion.
According to reports, PSG were prepared to discuss Leipzig's transfer fee but refused to accept additional commission and bonus demands reportedly approaching €20 million.
The French champions are said to have viewed those demands as excessive and decided to abandon negotiations altogether.
With PSG stepping aside, many expected Leipzig to lower their asking price.
Real Madrid stand alone
Instead, the transfer has entered an even stranger phase.
Despite becoming the only serious bidder, Real Madrid continue negotiating based on Leipzig's original valuation, with the Bundesliga club reportedly refusing to reduce the price.
Industry observers have questioned that logic.
Normally, when competition disappears, transfer fees become more flexible. In this case, however, Leipzig have maintained their position despite the collapse of interest from England and France.
According to the reports, Real Madrid's legal department has already reviewed documentation relating to several ongoing disputes connected to the player.
Even so, the Spanish giants remain interested in completing the transfer.
A transfer unlike any other
What began as a conventional pursuit of one of Europe's brightest young talents has developed into a complex legal and financial negotiation involving agents, commissions and contractual disputes.
Whether Real Madrid ultimately completes the signing or decides to follow the path taken by other European giants remains one of the biggest unanswered questions of the transfer window.
For now, one thing appears clear. Every major contender has stepped away from the negotiating table except Real Madrid.
