Jesús Rodríguez scored his first European goal, but Real Betis may be forced to sell their 19-year-old talent this summer due to financial pressures and Premier League interest.
Jesús Rodríguez is making waves at Real Betis, but the Spanish club could soon face a major decision about the future of their 19-year-old star. The winger scored his first goal in European competition last night, helping Betis secure a strong position ahead of the second leg of their quarter-final tie.
Rodríguez, who plays primarily on the left wing, has impressed with his technique, physicality, and versatility. He has also shown the ability to contribute centrally in attack, and Betis moved quickly to extend his contract in September. The new deal includes a €50 million release clause.
Chelsea are already tracking the teenager and are reportedly interested in lowering the asking price. While Betis are keen to keep hold of Rodríguez, financial constraints may force their hand, especially as they look to sign Antony from Manchester United this summer.
The club’s leadership is wary of repeating past mistakes. In January, they sold fellow 19-year-old Assane Diao to Como for just €12 million. Diao has adapted quickly to Serie A and is already attracting higher bids, raising questions about whether Betis acted too soon.
Betis are currently six points off the Champions League places in La Liga with eight matches remaining. If they fail to qualify for Europe's top competition, the pressure to cash in on Rodríguez will only grow.
The decision could define Betis’ summer — sell now and stabilize the books, or keep faith in a player who could soon be worth much more.
