Mateo Kovačić could leave Manchester City this summer, with Atlético Madrid showing serious interest in the Croatian midfielder as part of their plans to strengthen the squad.
Mateo Kovačić is currently in his second season at Manchester City, where he has seen increased playing time this year due to Rodri’s injury. Pep Guardiola has relied on the Croatian international as his first-choice backup for the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner.
However, City’s struggles this season could lead to major squad changes in the summer, and the 30-year-old midfielder is reportedly among the players who could be moved on. Atlético Madrid has emerged as a serious suitor, with Diego Simeone keen to strengthen his midfield.
A return to Madrid would not be unfamiliar territory for Kovačić, who previously played for Real Madrid before moving to Chelsea. With two years left on his contract, City would likely demand a significant transfer fee if they decide to part ways with him.
City has already identified a potential replacement—Brazilian midfielder Ederson from Atalanta, who is expected to be one of several new arrivals at Etihad Stadium this summer.
