South African international Jayden Adams has died at the age of 25, only weeks after representing his country at the 2026 World Cup.

South African football has been struck by tragedy following the death of Jayden Adams at the age of 25.
The midfielder, who recently represented South Africa at the 2026 World Cup, had been preparing to travel with Mamelodi Sundowns for the club's pre-season tour of Europe before his life was cut short.
A rising star gone too soon
Adams had emerged as one of South Africa's brightest football talents over the past two seasons.
His rapid rise was rewarded with a place in the national team squad for the 2026 World Cup, marking the biggest achievement of his career.
The exact cause of his death has not yet been officially confirmed. However, people close to the player have confirmed the tragic news.
Family asks for privacy
Mamelodi Sundowns have not yet released a detailed public statement out of respect for Adams' family, who are grieving their loss.
The news was confirmed by his mentor, Brendine Johnson.
"Everything is still very fresh and painful. The wounds are completely open. The family asks for privacy and cannot answer questions at the moment. This has devastated all of us. He had only just returned from the World Cup, and then this happened. I spoke to him on Thursday. He was full of optimism about the future and excited for the new season with the CAF champions. Nobody expected this," Johnson said.
World Cup appearances
Adams made three appearances at the 2026 World Cup.
He played 60 minutes against Mexico, featured for a half against the Czech Republic, and came on for the final ten minutes against South Korea. He remained an unused substitute during South Africa's round of 16 defeat to Canada.
His death is a devastating loss for South African football, with one of the country's most promising players passing away at the age of just 25.
