Wrexham co-owner Rob McElhenney admires Liverpool and their anthem, but playfully hopes to beat them one day as his club continues its meteoric rise toward the Premier League.
Wrexham co-owner Rob McElhenney has expressed his admiration for Liverpool and their iconic anthem ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’—but admitted he hopes to “mash their dreams into oblivion” should the clubs ever meet on the pitch.
Speaking on the Men In Blazers podcast following Wrexham’s third consecutive promotion, McElhenney reflected on the incredible journey of the Welsh club, which will return to the Championship next season for the first time in 43 years.
“The relationship and the love that you have for each other and your community is forged in pain,” he said. “Sport is just a great metaphor for that. Hopefully one day we'll be competing with Liverpool, but their song, You'll Never Walk Alone, is just so unbelievably beautiful for a football team and for a community.”
Despite his admiration, McElhenney—known for his role in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia—couldn’t resist a playful dig: “One day I hope to mash their dreams into oblivion, but for now I celebrate along with Humphrey [Ker] because he loves Liverpool.”
He revealed that Wrexham striker Paul Mullin is also a Liverpool fan, adding: “So I've followed Liverpool and I'm so happy for them and their supporters. But really that song exemplifies what we're trying to do as well.”
Since McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds took over in 2021, Wrexham’s fortunes have changed dramatically. Now with their eyes on the Premier League, the Red Dragons are preparing for a busy summer transfer window to strengthen Phil Parkinson’s squad.
The players are currently celebrating in Las Vegas for a third straight year after achieving back-to-back-to-back promotions in an inspiring rise through the English football pyramid.
