Granit Xhaka blasted Michael Oliver’s penalty decision in Leverkusen’s 3-0 loss to Bayern, insisting the English referee would never give such a call in the Premier League.

Granit Xhaka strongly disagreed with Michael Oliver’s decision to award a penalty to Bayern Munich, a key moment in Bayer Leverkusen’s 3-0 loss. The Swiss international voiced his frustration after the match, insisting that the same call would never have been made in the Premier League.

"Referee Michael Oliver wouldn’t have given that in the Premier League. I spent seven years there, and I know him. I’m convinced he wouldn’t have awarded it in England—these situations happen all the time, and they don’t get called. It’s disappointing that such a penalty was given at this level, potentially deciding the match. If every block led to a penalty, there would be spot-kicks in every game," said Xhaka.

The former Arsenal midfielder was referring to a challenge by his teammate Edmond Tapsoba, who appeared to be blocking Harry Kane’s movement during a corner kick. However, Oliver saw the incident differently and pointed to the spot.

Despite the controversial decision, Leverkusen failed to deliver a convincing performance.

"We are very frustrated. A lot happened, and I’m holding back from saying something I shouldn’t. I don’t want to single anyone out, but we allowed things that we simply shouldn’t have," added Xhaka.

The defeat marked Bayern Munich’s first victory over Leverkusen since Xabi Alonso took charge, following three draws and three losses against the Bundesliga leaders.

The return leg at the BayArena is set for Tuesday, with Bayern facing an almost impossible task of overturning the deficit to keep their title hopes alive.
