Martin Zubimendi has denied transfer rumours linking him to Arsenal and expressed deep admiration for Xabi Alonso, calling him his idol amid Real Madrid interest.

Martin Zubimendi has moved to dismiss reports linking him with a move to Arsenal this summer, insisting that nothing is agreed while expressing admiration for Xabi Alonso amid talk of a potential switch to Real Madrid.

The Real Sociedad midfielder, speaking to RNE while on international duty with Spain, said his future remains uncertain but admitted it could be a long summer of speculation. “There are options, but it looks like it's going to be a different and long summer. I don't know how it will end,” he explained.

Zubimendi has attracted interest from several elite clubs, including Arsenal and Real Madrid. While the Gunners reportedly have a slight edge, the 25-year-old was asked how he would respond if former coach Xabi Alonso – now a target to lead Madrid – came calling.

“He's always been my idol. I was lucky to be coached by him during a very important year,” said Zubimendi, referring to the 2019/20 season under Alonso at Real Sociedad B. “I don't like to talk about those scenarios. It would be disrespectful to answer while I'm with the national team.”

Regarding speculation of an imminent move to North London, Zubimendi explained that he had posted photos from the beach as a light-hearted response to dismiss the false narrative. “I did that to make it clear those rumours weren’t true,” he added.

While a transfer remains possible, Zubimendi’s words suggest no decision is imminent, and his respect for Alonso could yet play a major role in shaping his future.
